January 9, 2008Well guys and gals I was taking advatage of yesterdays 74 degree temperature so I messed around with the truck yesterday. I set the valves and got them good and right, seen I had a broken wire at the thermostat housing so I fixed that. Since I changed the carb over last year I had just unhooked the egr and stuff but did'nt take any of it off. So I did so took it all off. Lightend the truck about 5 lbs too lol. Ok now the funny part kinda. I went to work and on about my 4th delivery the valves started rattling, I got suspicious so I pulled over and popped the hood. As I look around I see oil squirting out of the bolt hole to the egr mount. Silly me I should've known to put it back in but forgot. I put a bolt in it and drove it back to work. Put 4 quarts of oil in it and its fine now. Could've been without a truck last night if I was driving anything else. That makes the second time my motor has been ran without oil and still does fine. Man you have just gotta love Toyota's.
January 9, 2008Thats just like our 85 its block has been frozen twice now and still runs like a top.
January 9, 2008Yep them toyotas, Fuel leak caused a fire which was fixed still runs great with 244,557 miles.
January 10, 2008Oil wise, what weight oil do most of you use. I just changed my oil and continued to use 10w 30 castrol. Then i was talking to some mechanic and he said for the toyotas with a lot of miles that is too thin, he told me he runs 20w50 castrol in his. What do you guys think???
January 11, 2008I've been using castrol 10w-40 in mine for the past 8 years and my motor is clean as can be when I take it apart. Been thinking about going to synthetic but not for sure how it would be on the many mile 22r of mine.
January 15, 2008I use Castrol for break in, and Mobil 1 there after.Although my used vehicles with high mileage I just run the Castrol and bump the weight a tad.
January 15, 2008I was useing Castrol 10-30 and switched over to Texaco 10-30 synthetic blend, don't think it was a good switch though, had the main seal replaced about 4 mos. ago, leaking again now and most of the time it sounds like it's low on oil, gonna go back to Castrol and Prolong mix like before, maybe get my lost mileage back too.
January 16, 2008Yeah you can't go wrong with Castrol.
January 16, 2008I had the same bolt issue with my new head from engbldr. I thought maybe I broke something with a long bolt or just got a bad head. I ended up putting the bolt in with wet sealant to get it to stop leaking. I use the mobile 1 green top.282k and still going. Although my trans is starting to whine now.
January 16, 2008I was running 5 quarts of 10w30 and i could hear both of the cams rotating. I guess thats what it was, thats what i was told. Ended up draining out two quarts, putting one quart of 20w50 castrol and a quart of lucas oil treatment, the engine is so much quieter now!!!! can still hear it, but only when the rpms are about 3,000 and up. I am really impressed!!!!!
